From Tape-Ins to Keratin: A Deep Dive into Hair Extension Options

So, you’ve decided to dive into the world of hair extensions—whether it’s because of a color mishap that left you with less hair than you’d like, or maybe your hair isn’t as thick as it used to be. Perhaps you’re craving a bold, vivid hair color without the commitment of dyeing your natural hair. Whatever the reason, extensions are an incredible way to transform your look and get that instant gratification.

But before you jump in, let's explore a few popular extension methods out there today, along with their pros and cons, so you can find the perfect match for your style goals.

Tape-In Extensions

  • Pros: Tape-ins are fantastic for adding a bold splash of color with minimal application. They blend seamlessly and offer a big impact with little effort.

  • Cons: They can be harder to remove if left in too long, especially past the 6-7 week mark. Plus, tape-ins can limit certain hairstyles since the tapes can only move up or down.

Sew-In (Weave) Extensions

  • Pros: Ideal for long-lasting wear, with new options like beaded methods and lighter wefts available for finer hair types.

  • Cons: A bad installation can feel heavy and uncomfortable.  If not installed correctly, the wefts can also pull at the corners, leading to them popping up or causing tugging and breakage in those areas.

Micro-Link (I-Tip) Extensions

  • Pros: No glue or heat, reusable. You can style your hair in various ways since the hair moves 360 degrees.

  • Cons: Can slip easily. They require regular maintenance every 4-5 weeks. If not installed correctly, with too little hair in the bead, or if the client is rough when detangling, hair can easily be ripped out.

Fusion (Keratin) Extensions

  • Pros: Provides a natural look that’s long-lasting and customizable. With proper care, they can last up to 4-5 months.

  • Cons: Unfortunately, the hair often can’t be reused, and if not properly maintained, it can mat, leading to tangles and breakage.

Clip-In Extensions

  • Pros: Clip-ins are perfect for those who want a temporary, easy-to-apply option. They’re a great way to add volume or length on the go.

  • Cons: To get a seamless, natural look, it’s best to go in for a color-matching consultation with a stylist. Most places can custom order clip-ins for you to ensure a perfect match.

So while you might be super excited to get started and think you’ve found your perfect method, it’s important to be realistic with yourself and follow your aftercare instructions to the letter. Many hair horror stories—like matting, breakage, and hair loss—happen because aftercare isn’t taken seriously.

The cool thing is, extensions are considered a protective style. They can actually help your natural hair grow by cushioning it from the daily heat styling and aggressive activities, as long as you wear and maintain them properly.

If you’re ready to take the plunge, book a consultation with our stylist, Evette, at CHL in Walnut Creek, California. Her go-to methods are Tape-ins and Keratin Fusion extensions—she’ll make sure you walk out with the hair of your dreams!
