We have been fortunate to be a part of Peezy's journey in this industry and her growth to an in-demand hair artist. For those that don't know about our artists, today we get to share some personal thoughts and stories from Peezy.
I have to start with this: Is there a story behind the name "Peezy"?
Peezy: Peezy started as a nickname years ago and it just stuck. It’s also easier for me to introduce myself that way because of my speech impediment and in a busy salon it’s much easier to hear someone call ‘Peezy’ across the room.
Very true and I feel there's only one Peezy. When did you start on your path as a hair artist?
Peezy: Growing up, two of my mom’s sisters were hairstylists and one of them I’m especially close with used to do my hair every two weeks. I was always around it. I remember playing with her mannequin heads and watching her work and sometimes she would even let me do her daughter’s hair.
In high school I started getting really bored with the advanced placement classes we were pushed toward. Around that time I learned about a program where students could go to beauty school for half the day.
That's a great opportunity!
Peezy: Unfortunately I wasn’t able to do that program. After graduating I tried going to a four-year university, but after two semesters I realized pretty quickly it wasn’t the right path for me. That’s when I started seriously looking into beauty school. Once I enrolled and started learning, everything finally clicked and made a lot more sense to me. I felt more engaged and motivated than I ever had in school before, and that’s when I knew this was the direction I wanted to go.
I guess it just wasn't the right time yet during high school, but it all worked out in the end. What sort of hair styles and artistry did you find yourself leaning into?
Peezy: I specialize in shaggy, layered, alternative haircuts and I work with all hair textures and curl patterns. Over time I realized I’m really drawn to hair that has movement, texture, and personality. I like cuts that feel expressive and a little less rigid or overly polished.
As I kept working behind the chair, that style naturally became the direction my work evolved in. Clients who like that kind of hair started finding me, and it’s something I really enjoy continuing to refine creatively.
That's right, you went viral with a shagy, layered cut video on TikTok!
Peezy: When I went viral it was honestly a really unexpected and surreal experience. I’ve never really been someone who felt popular on social media, so seeing that many people suddenly connect with something I created was a strange feeling in the best way.
How did that end up impacting you?
Peezy: All I’ve ever really wanted to do was hair, so having a video of my work reach that many people meant a lot to me. It reminded me that the work I’m passionate about can resonate with people far beyond the chair.
It also ended up helping my business grow tremendously. I started getting more eyes on my work and connecting with people who were drawn to the type of cuts and styles I enjoy creating. That experience really showed me how powerful sharing your work online can be and encouraged me to keep creating and posting more of what I love doing.
I really love how you put that. Sharing your skill publicly is a necessary part of growing your business even though it's scary. Your video set a prime example of what is possible. So much that you won an inaugural CHL Award for it!
Peezy: Receiving the award at the holiday party meant a lot to me because it gave me a moment to really reflect on my growth. When you’re working behind the chair every day, you’re so focused on improving and moving forward that you don’t always stop to look at how far you’ve come.
Being recognized in front of the team felt really encouraging and made me feel proud of the work I’ve been putting into my craft. Moments like that remind me why I love doing this and motivate me to keep learning, growing, and pushing myself creatively.
Although you're super busy with bookings from your cutting videos, tell me about what you want to branch out into more for growth.
Peezy: I’d really like to expand into K-Tips and extensions. I think extensions are a great way to add length, fullness, or even just more versatility to someone’s look. It opens up a lot of creative possibilities and it’s something I’d love to keep learning more about and incorporating into my work.
We have had the privilege to watch your growth here from training with Katya and now being an in-demand hair artist. Have newer goals in this profession emerged as you progressed?
Peezy: As I’ve grown behind the chair, I’ve realized how important communication and education are between stylists and clients. There’s often a gap between what happens in the salon and what people experience with their hair at home, and I’m really interested in helping bridge that gap.
That’s actually part of what inspired me to start developing my texture and styling class. I want to help people better understand their hair and feel more confident working with it themselves. When clients understand their hair and what it needs, appointments tend to feel smoother and less stressful for everyone involved.
I’ve also been focusing more on content creation so I can share knowledge, connect with the kind of clients I enjoy working with, and make hair feel a little less confusing or intimidating for people.
Let's change topics for bit: Do you have other hobbies or skills that you're pursuing?
Peezy: Outside of the salon I still like to stay creative in other ways. I spend a lot of time taking care of my plant babies, which has become a hobby I really enjoy. I also love painting, and recently I’ve been experimenting with clay art.
Ah, so you're also creative outside of your career.
Peezy: It’s nice having creative outlets outside of hair and I think it helps keep my creativity fresh when I’m back behind the chair.
I agree with you. Do you have goals or dreams regarding your other passions and/or personal growth?
Peezy: My biggest goal is to feel genuinely happy and fulfilled in what I’m doing. I want to keep growing creatively while also building a life that feels balanced and enjoyable outside of the salon. Personal growth for me right now is about continuing to learn, explore new creative outlets, and making sure the lifestyle I’m building actually supports the things that matter to me.
That is a very healthy future and I hope you achieve it all. Finally, what is the one thing you want to ensure a new client that books with you understands about you before they sit in the chair?
Peezy: I want people to know they can feel comfortable in my chair. I’m very easy to talk to and I enjoy connecting with my clients, but there’s never any pressure either. Some people want to chat the whole appointment and some people just want to relax, and I’m happy either way.
My goal is really just to create a space where people feel at ease and leave feeling confident and excited about their hair.
